BOOKMARKS? Murphy was right. For every good thing there's at least one problem. The problem here: it's not easy to leave a "bookmark" where you stop reading, so when you come back you can go right to that spot.
I am meeting with technical representatives from the United Nations, Microsoft, and the Startrek crew – but so far we haven't solved this. More later.
FOR NOW I SUGGEST A WORKAROUND.
Use Notepad/Textpad
• In Windows, open the Notepad program
(Start => Programs => Accessories => Notepad).Reduce its screen size if you like, and keep it open in some unobtrusive corner.
If you're using a Mac, open Textpad or Simpletext, or whatever it's called now.
Write Yourself a Note
• When you close your ebook, write a small note to yourself in Notepad/Textpad with the page number or chapter number where you left off.
Or else, here's a clever wrinkle, courtesy of Richard Seltzer. (His site is
Book Collections on CD and DVD.)Look at the text you're saying goodbye to, and find a unique combination of letters. For example, "que comb" or "tion of lett". Make a note of it. When you return to your ebook, search for that unique combination.
BONUS: YOU CAN DO MAGIC.
The payoff in keeping a little Notepad/Textpad diary is not just having ebook bookmarks. There are two more advantages.
(1) You can keep all sorts of notes. Where you parked your Mercedes – the resort hotel you want to go to next time – when to take your next batch of pills – where you left your teeth...
(2) You can be an ebook magician. I am going to show you an amazing piece of book-reading magic involving Notepad or Textpad.
